Founded in the 17BC under the name of Colonia Augusta Treverorum, was the capital of the Trévires and is the oldest town in Germany. This Roman colony was an important place for the defense against barbarians and walls were protecting the largest urban of the entire Gaule with 620 acres. The only element left from these fortifications are some wall foundations and the Porta Nigra a monumental gate, symbol of the city. Very important trading metropolis with 80,000 inhabitants in the 2C, it became one of the capital of the Tetrarchy at the end of the 3C and was minting money in 294, Trier was called "Second Rome" (Roma Secunda). From the Roman times, subsists today some parts of the amphitheatre, a basilica and baths. In the early 5C, Trier was repeatedly attacked and pillaged by the Francs.It was the main city of the French Sarre department between 1797 and 1814 under the name of Treves. 100,000 people leave in Trier. |
